state that scripture is “fulfilled” (πληρόω) in contrast to Matthew and Luke. Both occurrences are placed on the lips of Jesus, as are most of Mark’s scripture citations.8 At the inauguration of his mission Jesus announces, “The time is fulfilled” (Mark 1:15; πεπλήρωται ὁ καιρός). When he is arrested he says, “Day after day I was with you teaching and you did not arrest me. But in order that the scriptures might be fulfilled …” (Mark 14:49; πληρωθῶαιν αἱ γραφαί). Mark, the narrator, resists
